Final verdicts in baby purchase plot and Hidelina blood bags to be issued today

By Yasmine Saleh / Daily News Egypt
First Published: September 17, 2009

CAIRO: The South Cairo Criminal Court is expected to rule on Thursday on two of the most high profile cases; the baby purchase plot and the contaminated Hidelina blood bags.

Earlier this year, seven Egyptians and four American women were accused of allegedly trying to sell four babies and issuing fake birth certificates and passports.

Eight of them were arrested and three remain at large.

The court is also expected to issue its verdict in the contaminated Hidelina blood bags case, where seven officials from the company and the Ministry of Health are accused of being involved in importing and selling over 200,000 blood bags that are not manufactured according to the ministry’s standards.

The blood bags were ripe with bacteria and fungi that, some doctors said, can cause cancer and hepatitis.

The court has been hearing the prosecution’s and defense lawyers’ statements since last June.

The court examined seven reports submitted by various authorities. All of them stated that the blood bag samples they had examined violated 14 local and international medical manufacturing standards.

CAIRO: The South Cairo Criminal Court postponed the verdict on the contaminated Hidelina blood bags case to Nov.19.

In a crowded session on Thursday morning, where none of the defendants were present, the Egyptian court postponed the verdict for next month in a controversial case that dates back to 2007. Seven officials from Hidelina company that manufactures blood bags as well as officials from the Ministry of Health were accused of delivering over 200,000 contaminated blood bags that do not conform with the ministry’s standards.

The blood bags were ripe with bacteria and fungi that, some doctors said can cause cancer and hepatitis.

Among those charged is factory owner Hani Sorour, who is also a former MP affiliated with the National Democratic Party. Sorour was stripped of his parliamentary immunity in January 2007. Also charged were Dr Helmi Salah Al-Din, general manager of the blood unit at the Ministry of Health; Dr Mohamed Wagdan, chairman of the technical center in Hidelina; Nivan Sorour, Sorour’s sister and board member in Hidelina; as well as three other company employees.

On Nov.7, 2008 the Cairo Appeals Court overturned a previous Criminal Court ruling exonerating those implicated in the Hidelina case and ordered a retrial upon request from Prosecutor General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud.

As reported in the Blog:
"It seems that the rumors are true and Dr.Hani Sorour and his sister are in Switzerland spending the weekend in Omar El-Nasharty’s villa there !!?? Do not you love the fact the runaway businessmen take care of each other !!??

Was not that Omar El-Nasharty whom in the last couple of weeks trashed Algeria and swore on the love of Egypt and her president on air shows on the phones from London !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Back to the medical supplies mogul and his sister ; it is believed that they left Egypt with fake passports and fake ID , the same old scenario of the iron lady and the rest of runaway businessmen.

Again as Karim Abdel Aziz is active in marketing his film , why no one is asking him about the location of his father in law ; with my all respect he should not come chanting about the love of the country and his father in law is breaking its laws and jeopardizing the health of millions of its citizens for sake of extra cash !!?? I know he is not responsible for his father in law’s actions but at least he should have the decency not to launch his film at the same time Sorour has not only violated and disrespected Egyptian courts but he also escaped using from the country fake ids !!!!?

Already I do not know why he would escape 3 years in jail !! It is not execution for God sake and do not tell me he did it because he is innocent !! Innocent people do not run using fake passports and ids. "

http://egyptianchronicles.blogspot.com/2009/10/where-is-hani-sorror.html

As reported in the Blog:

"Hani Sorror , the famous businessman and NDP member of Parliament whose famous controversial corruption case is still in front of the court has suddenly disappeared ; he is no where to be found currently in the country according to Al Ahrar newspaper yesterday. You do not need too much time to think that he left the country , he is not the first businessman nor NDPian to flee the country ; Mamdouh Ismail did it before him.
The judge who will announce the final verdict in his case aka Hideline case is Mohamedi konsowah who earned public fame because of the Suzanne Tamim's murder case, konsowah is known to be strict and also fair in his verdicts. There have been lots of expectations that Sorror will be convicted this time when it was announced that Konsowah was the judge in the appeal.
The verdict was to be announced last September 17th, 2009 but due to the fact that none of the accused has appeared in court ,the Judge decided to delay the sentence hearing to next November 19th ,2009. Either Sorror will show up on that date or he will be another runaway NDP businessman.
If this man really has left the country then he will be hurting his son in law Cinema star Karim Abdel Aziz's career a lot.
To refresh your memory Hany Sorror used to import blood bags through his medical supplies company Hidelina , those bags turned out to be contaminated with germs which threaten thousands of patients' lives with dangerous diseases and viruses especially that they were mainly used in the public sector hospitals."

As quoted:
"Guilty, but where is he?
Former MP Hani Sorour and his associates have been sentenced to three years for their involvement in selling defective blood bags, reports Reem Leila

On 19 November Cairo Criminal Court sentenced former MP Hani Sorour and CEO of Hayedelena for Advanced Medical Industries Company (HAMIC), and his sister Nivan, HAMIC's head of board of directors, to three years in jail for selling defective blood bags to the Ministry of Health.

Helmi Salaheddin, general manager of the blood affairs department at the Ministry of Health, and Mohamed Wegdan, chairman of the technical centre in HAMIC, received the same sentence.

The court, headed by Judge Mohamedi Qonsowah, also sentenced three of the company's employees -- Wafaa Abdel-Rahim, Ashraf Ishaq and Fathia Ahmed Abdel-Rahim to six months in jail with hard labour.

All were charged in absentia. Authorities have been unable to identify their whereabouts. Officials at the Ministry of Interior confirm that neither Sorour nor Nivan, his sister, has left the country despite searches in Cairo, Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh."

Interestingly for some reason The Daily News Egypt has removed all the related news articles from it's server.
